REVOLUTIONARY WAR
WAD ACg 1217
PDAbIdM-AMFIrAid WAR
The gravesites, taken at the
historic Union Cemetery in Steu-
benville, depict the Wars of our
Nation, a grim reminder of the
brave heroes who lost their lives
in times of strife.
The first order for the obser-
vance of Memorial Day was issued
in May, 1868 by General John A.
Logan of the Grand Army of the
Republic, "for the purpose of
strewing with flowers or other-
wise decorating the graves of
comrades who died in defense of
their Country". For many years
after the Civil War, the GAR in
the North and the Confederate
Veterans in the South took charge
Sof Memorial Day in their re-
spective communities. When
these founding organizations be-
came unable to carry on these
rites actively, the American Le-
gion pledged to help perpetuate
the annual observance of Memor-
ial Day, Commander Hall ex-
plained. Although it began as a
day to commemorate the dead of
all wars, Memorial Day has also
become an appropriate occasion
for the decoration of the graves
of family and friends.
Residents of Wintersville are
cordially invited to attend Mem-
orial Day services on Thurs-
day, May 30, 1968, sponsored by

If there are any questions,
please call the "Citizen" office
at 264-4303.
The "Citizen"' will be glad to
take pictures of social and civic
functions, but, again, due to the
increasing demand, publicity
chairmen are asked to limit any
news, accompanied with a picture,
to captions only. We feel that in
this way, we will be permitted to
allow better coverage to more or-
ganizations.
The "Citizen" wants to
continue to be the largest weekly

continue to be known as the news-
paper that "has more pictures
than Life Magazine."
